I wonder: for the papers you block, do you think other PC members are entering high/moderate bids? Or is there a general lack of interest in those papers, so by blocking them you end up sticking someone else with the unpleasant reviewing job?Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02324305849939236148noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3670285.post-14460741808615018672012-11-23T13:37:29.729-08:002012-11-23T13:37:29.729-08:00For POPL'12, we separated bids for *preference...For POPL'12, we separated bids for *preference* from bids for *expertise* and I designed an assignment algorithm that aims to maximize preferences for reviewers and expertise for papers; you will only be assigned a paper you don't (or only moderately) prefer if we can't otherwise find sufficient experts. I think this approach worked really well. By-the-way, using /*@//@*/ to force a new line breaks the background color (if you set it to anything but white). I also wanted more control over how lines were broken than the `breaklines' option provides.

I created a short style file:

lstnumbermajic.sty
----------------------------
\newcommand{\lstomitnum}{\global\advance\lst@skipnumbers-1}

\newcommand{\lstcontinue}{\global\advance\lst@skipnumbers-1
\global\advance\c@lstnumber-1}

\newcommand{\lstskipnum}[1]{\addtocounter{lstnumber}{#1}}
------------------------------

Including this in the preamble, lines can be broken with:

1 String MyString= \*@\lstcontinue@*\
"Hello world!"
2 double x;
3 double y; \*@\lstskipnum{8}\lstomitnum@*\
...
13 double z=x+y;

You then just break lines manually, the way you want.Antoniohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/04505264061404051965noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3670285.post-49277329082302729332010-10-05T21:27:35.529-07:002010-10-05T21:27:35.529-07:00@Bill: No plans to get on Foursquare period, so my...@Bill: No plans to get on Foursquare period, so my Twitter feed is safe :-)

@Phil: The inconsistency is a big problem; see the software bugs I wrote about above with Bluetooth and music playback, specific to HTC's customization of Android. It is definitely affecting developers, though I don't know about the degree. Apparently Google is working on some massive test suite that vendors will have to pass to use the Android name, so that might reduce the bugs a bit. But, there's still the delay in getting new OS versions, which sucks.

Now that Apple has loosened up their developer restrictions a bit, I'd be more open to an iPad, though I don't think I can justify the expense at this point.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02324305849939236148noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3670285.post-78713167279166310512010-10-05T18:25:36.955-07:002010-10-05T18:25:36.955-07:00I enjoyed your review!

Swype is awesome too.

My biggest long term concern about Android is that the inconsistency of the platform across versions/vendors. Froyo has been out for months. Samsung is still testing their layer on top of it. And I imagine that AT&T will then work on their layer on top of Samsung's layer. Ugh. I haven't written anything for android yet, but I wonder how the inconsistencies will affect developers.

I'd like to get a tablet as well. I share your concerns about Apple, though I wonder whether there will be a decent alternative to the ipad for a couple of years.
